I think that this is the smartest statement I have read in a long while about the process of coming out. I had a very hard time with it for exactly the reasons stated in the letter. I spent way too much time and energy trying to convince people around me that a) I wasn't gay and b) if I was gay would they be okay with it. Basically I was trying to set up a risk-free coming out experience. Well that's not possible. You can't out without taking the chance that someone is not going to accept it. That's just the harsh reality of it. However, it is a lot easier to deal with if you focus your energy and time on making sure that you are okay with it. And for the record, I am really glad that the writer of the piece I am responding to is honest enough to admit that he still feels like there are issues to work through and that he is not 100% comfortable yet. I definitely feel this way and probably will for a while. I just wanted to applaud the writer for being so honest about what actually happens. Thanks!
