"Bye honey",
his wife smiled at him and locked so cute holding his little 5-year-old boy with the other hand.
"Bye daddy!"
It felt almost too good, too warm in his heart seiing his little family like this. This was what he lived for. He waved back and quickly climbed into the spacetaxi which was hovering beside him. The doors closed and in no time they were so high in the air that his family only looked like little dots on the green lawn in front of their house. Fake lawn, of course, it had been years since anything green had grown outside.
After two minutes the space taxi descended and then hovered above the Crust-tower. Gus got off and looked up to the giant double cross that had been installed on top of this building. With 237 floors it was the highest building in The City, and everytime he saw the giant symbol he felt proud to be part of such a big and powerful organization. He left the roof and entered the lift. It greeted him with a metallic voice saying: "Good morning, Mr Diaz. It is 6:54. You are early today."
Gus smiled. Amazing what computers can do these days. And all without any mistake - apart from the human ones. Yes, he was indeed early today. He had taken an earlier taxi to reprogramme the computer-key for his house. His little son, when playing with it, had scratched the surface and now it didn't open the doors properly. Not easy to be reprogrammed and officially he would have to hand it into the Metroforce. But that was one of the advantages of being a Systemite at Crust. He would reprogramme it himself.
Gus walked along the glass cubicles of his colleagues, some of whom had already arrived. He smiled briefly when someone looked up from his dashboard. Only a quick smile of recognition - the Board didn't approve of social contact between the Crust employees. Everybody had to socialize within his Living Area Circle. That was fine with Gus. He wasn't too fond of his colleagues anyway.
When he reached his cubicle, he stopped in surprise. His computer was on. That was illegal and he could've sworn he'd turned it off the night before. The screen had been turned off but not the machine. Curious, he switched on the machine. Immediately, a green logo filled the screen: "FREEDOM FORCE". Somewhere in the building an alarm went off. Gus went pale. The SDR! The called themselves the 'Freedom Force', but the Government called them the 'Sexually Deviant Resistance', SDR for short. Terrorists, anarchists, people who wanted to destroy the state, the family, everything he believed in! And their illegal propaganda page was on his screen!
Sweat started pouring down his forehead. 'Think, Gus, think!' he told himself. In a split second he made a decision. Quickly he typed in the 'erase'-command. Then he ran for the lift. From the other side of the open plan office he could see two Metroforce officers approaching. They were big and intimidating, wearing heavy laser guns. Amazing, how fast they had found him! Again, technology.
Now one of them had seen him and started running. They were approaching quickly. Finally, the lift arrived and the door opened. In a hurry, Gus stepped inside. A voice said: "Hello, Mr Diaz, it is -" and was cut short by Gus frantically pressing the G-button. Mercifully, before the officers had reached the lift, the door closed and the speedlift started moving. The doors opened again after 12 seconds and Gus tentatively entered the huge marble lobby. Everything was quiet down here. Forcing himself not to run, he walked towards the big revolving glass doors. He had almost reached them when behind him he heard the 'bing' of the other lift. "Stop this man" he heard the officers shout. He ran towards the doors, inside and out. On the street he turned left into a road that he knew led into a sleazy part of The City where he would be able to find some cover. If he got that far. He heard the officers' steps behind him getting closer. They were in much better shape. He'd never get away. They were getting closer and closer.
Suddenly, he heard the familiar 'whishh' of a space taxi landing next to him. The door opened hydraulically and someone grabbed his arm.
"Get in, quickly".
Gus climbed in and even before the door was completely closed the taxi took off, about 100 meters up, then straight ahead for some time, suddenly taking a sharp right turn between two buildings. He didn't dare look back at the Metroforce officers. What it they shot them down? But nothing happened. After another five minutes of flying the pilot landed the taxi in a dark side alley in the dilapidated part of town. He turned off the engine and turned towards Gus.
"Welcome to the Freedom Force, Gustavo Diaz. We've been waiting for you."
Then he put one of his big, slightly dirty hands on Gus' leg and smiled at him.
