I would suggest you be direct about you feelings. Let your friend know that you want to explore this new direction. Tell him you would feel comfortable doing it with him. But don't come on strong. See how he responds. After being friends for so long, he may feel uncomfortable with a possible change. Of course, he may have been wanting to help you along for some time but didn't want to risk loosing your friendship.
