Joey Stefano is, was, and always will be the James Dean of
beefcake and gay porno.
Few models that I have worked with during my extensive
career as a beefcake photographer have had the natural "in
your face" sensuality and the riveting charisma of Joey
Stefano.
Destined to live life in the fast lane and die young, Joey lived
hard and played hard, in every sense of the word. A good
account of this supernova's life, Wonder Bread and Ecstasy:
The Life and Death of Joey Stefano, by Charles Isherwood
(Allyson Publications, 1996) has recently been released. All
Joey fans should buy it and read it.
Some have said that Joey was temperamental and difficult to
work with. Not to me. I only regret that we did not have more
opportunities to work together.
The photos here at The Gay Cafe "cyberspace chapbook"
represent fewer than 20% of the more than 500 images that
were made at the first of my two sessions with Joey. (A
substantial portion, but much fewer than half, of the remaining
images will be available, check back soon!)
The session took place, late in 1990, on the spur of the
moment, in the Studio of Lowell Nesbitt (1933-1993), one of
America's foremost realist painters. Lowell's Rottweiler,
Shadow, was a delighted participant, and, after it was all over,
Lowell and I had a little difficulty getting Joey out of Lowell's
stunning white mink coat.
Please let Nathan know if you like these images and want
more. If your response is enthusiastic enough, I will dig into
my archives and not only release the rest of the 1990 images
but also publish and initial selection of images photographed
at my second and last session with Joey, which took place in
August of 1994. This session, apparently, was the last full still
photo session for which Joey posed.
